Gian Luigi Diana + Concetta Abbate
Spiral Music

Wednesday March 13, 2013 @ 5:00 PM

Gian Luigi Diana (sitar)
Concetta Abbate (violin)

Two of New York City's finest Italian musicians join forces to perform a folk-inspired set on violin and sitar as part of the Rubin Art Museum's Spiral Staircase Series. Each musician will feature original solo pieces in addition to the collaborative duo set. Italian folk songs, Indian raga-inspired improvisation, and Russian-style solo violin--this is sure to be a diverse and inspiring event!

G.L.Diana is a sitar player based in New York. He lived in India for over 6 years, studying sitar and Dhrupad vocal style in Vrindavana, Uttar Pradesh. He has studied under the guidance of the world-renowned sitar master, Ustad Shahid Parvez.

Violinist and composer Concetta Abbate plays music for groups representing diverse genres as Latin, Jazz, Classical, Baroque, Indie Rock, and Folk. She has performed at Symphony Space, Eastman School of Music, The Tilles Center at C.W. Post, The Rubin Museum of Art, The Stone, and The East Indian Music Academy. For the past three years, she has been an active performer in the MTA’s Music Under New York program with her Latin fusion band, Inti and the Moon. Abbate’s music has been featured on radio and television in Latin America and the US and her international tours extend to the South Pacific. Her approach to composition is greatly influenced by her musical experiences abroad, often drawing on folkloric styles and themes.
